The Man Who Would Not Die, Part III (A Continuing Saga)

by Michael Kelly

Lord Ekto Matsya collapsed immediately upon leaving the gleaming white structure which served as temple to the god Yajur.  It was not the reports he made to his god which were so demanding, but the strain of being in the presence of one so omnipotent.

As the king's servants made haste to carefully lift him and place him within his royal carriage, he reflected on what had transpired the many hours he was exposed to Yajur's glow. His report had gone pretty much as he had expected.  Everything pleased Kosala's revered god, at least until King Matsya got around to the subject of Kosala's chancellor, Agna Vedasa.

It turned out that not only had Priest Vedasa failed his assassination attempt on Lan-ts'ang Naporodn of the Southern Kozaki, but he had also been captured and identified as well.  This bit of information sent mighty Yajur into a tirade which threatened the very temple itself.

So it was that Agna Vedasa was ordered to Adventure.  Unbeknown to him the order was intended to get him killed.  However, to the frustration of King Matsya and anger of Yajur, he survived his ordeal.  Actually, Lord Matsya found he liked Agna which was most agonizing knowing that his god wished the priest dead.  Fortunately for Lord Ekto Matsya, Yajur's anger was sated by the news that Agna Vedasa had traveled to the Ilbars Steppes and put to death an evil wizard who practiced arcane magics unfit for the knowledge of mortal men.

Again Agna Vedasa was ordered to Adventure.  So he struck out for the North Vilayet where he faced down the leader of the Free Brotherhood Pirates and assumed his place.  With great skill and mastery did he lead the band of pirates to a treasure of great wealth.  In the process of taking these riches he was faced by 4 foes whom he easily slayed where they stood.  He returned to Kosala victorious with riches amounting to 1/3 of the treasury that Spring warseason. King Matsya was greatly pleased as the monies were sorely needed.  Unfortunately, mighty Yajur still was not satisfied especially since the capital had begun to suffer for the lack of rulership.

Lord Ekto Matsya pleadingly said, "Please my gracious lord, give thy Priest Vedasa a chance.  Has he not proven himself a most devoted disciple?  Can he be blamed for the wavering of our people when it is I who sent him Adventuring these past 2 warseasons?"

Yajur calmly replied, "You choose thy words wisely my king, for you know full well you were doing but mine will.  Indeed he has been a devote disciple and he did bring to Kosala much riches."

Lord Matsya sighed in relief, "Thank you for thy gracious words my lord", pausing momentarily, "What then are thine orders for thy Chancellor, my mighty lord?"

King Matsya could have almost sworn he heard Yajur sigh, "He has been devoted as you have said and so in death he shall be greatly rewarded.  Tell him to go unto Khorbul to eliminate one Mowji Wazir to aid our invasion of those lands."

Lord Matsya answer, "Thine will is my command great lord."

"Perhaps he will succeed in this task", pausing momentarily Yajur continued quietly, "Go now for I tire of such."
